The scope of the need
According to the Virginia Department of Veterans Services Commissioner's 2024 Annual Report and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs data, the Commonwealth is home to an estimated 678,149 veterans as of September 30, 2024 — ranking seventh in the nation. Within that population, the needs are significant and urgent — combat veterans living with the lasting effects of service, older veterans whose health needs are still surfacing, and active-duty service members transitioning into civilian life with little structured support.
Targeted outreach to underserved veterans
We have built deliberate, in-person outreach to every veteran in our service area — including those who may not identify with the Legion's traditional membership base but who have urgent and unmet needs. Trust is earned in person; we build it in person.
Family support
Military service touches the whole family. We extend support to veterans' spouses, dependents, and survivors — including survivor benefit counseling and referrals to caregiver support programs.
Emergency assistance referrals
For veterans experiencing acute financial crisis, the VBC provides immediate referrals to emergency assistance programs through the American Legion, the VA's supportive services network, and local nonprofit partners.
